One of my few American lady friends. Years back,  New Jersey’s Eva and I spent a lot of time together…Very nice lady and loads of fun.  You will remember her from the time she co-stared with Cary Grant’s suit in North by Northwest

Very nice boat…

Now here is a photo of a friend of Sir Basil modeling some very fetching and modest swimwear.  As you know, I have always been an advocate of public modesty in regards ladies and gentlemen.  Although I think some tend to take the modesty thing too far.  Modesty is one thing and prudery another.  Hidden is preferable to flouted if you ask me.  I mean, one can’t exactly be alluring in a string bikini.  Hot yes, alluring no.  And this type of suit does fit the bill, I think. Alluring does come to mind.   I find it quite preferable to the Catholic Amish practice of diving in with your peasant skirt and hand knitted sweater still hanging about your body.  As if the sight your very large naked thighs and varicose veins would tempt us poor chaps beyond reason.  Really, after your sixth or seventh child, our attention tends to wander a bit.  Please, most of these women have to sneak up on bath water.

But this suit style is just right.  Although the Countess always wears the little skirt thing with hers.  I asked her one time why she always did this and she said that the design of the suit, in her opinion, with long tail and small triangle of cloth showing below tends to focus the eyes of lecherous men (read all) on the black cat.   As if they needed any help in the matter.  Of course, I didn’t see the problem with this particular design flaw, but that’s just me.  And all cat’s are gray in the dark anyway…

Suzy Parker

When young(er) and in New York, I used to, without fail, get a call from Suzy Parker whenever I turned up.  She always had some place she wanted to take me.  And I didn’t mind.  Really.  Suzy was one of the first supermodels, along with her sister Dorian Leigh.  We used to have quite the time together.  They were definately a class act.  She (Suzy) also made a movie with Cary Grant, although this is not quite the same as hanging out with the Baz, it is close.

As you know, I myself, was something of a swinger back in the day…And much of said swinging was swung with my old friend Julie Christie.  Ah, now, there was a girl…I remember the time we…Well, can’t bandy a woman’s  name about, can one?  I’ll wait to the next get together of the RCBfA to recount my tale in more detail.

janette scottJanette Scott

b. 1938

Morecambe, Lancashire, England

Those of you like me, who have seen the original School for Scoundrels, will be familiar with painful feelings of longing concerning Janette Scott.  She was the proverbial cat’s meow during the 50’s and 60’s starring in a sting of vedy, vedy British romantic comedies, with Ian Carmichael, of course, and B-movie horror films (The Day of the Triffids anyone?).  Her sanity came under question in 1966 when she married Mel Torme, but she seemed on the way to recovery  in 1977 when she divorced him.  Her film career ended in 1967, but she did appear in the recent How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (2008) as the Simon Pegg’s characters mother.  Upon seeing her, I still felt the same…

Although we all realize that every advance made in communication makes the bore more terrible, there is, sometimes, a proverbial silver lining to be found.  For instance, with the proliferation of the Internet which employs most of it’s impressive bandwidth on porn, illiterate email and stupid and ridiculous blogs like this one, we also saw the rise of the retro pin-up…It seems that there were a few young ladies out there who, through nature, or, surgery, possessed the right stuff and had the requisite nostalgia to wish to parade said stuff “old school”.

One of the most notable of these young ladies is a dame from Atlanta named Lana Landis.  Now, once you see some photographic evidence of  Miss Landis I think you will agree that not much more need be said.  She does do a nice job of capturing the “look and feel”, if “look and feel” is the phrase I want, of the pin-ups of yore.  She does meet Sir Basil’s requirements in pin-ups, of being a very pretty girl and posing tastefully while achieving that difficult  balance between vixen and slut.  See for yourself:

The delectable Veronica Lake

The diminutive actress (4′11″) with the peek-a-boo hair style worked in Hollywood because she was the only actress shorter than Alan Ladd. For many years she could be seen about town on the arm of Sir Basil Seal. While having the reputation in Hollywood of being “hard to work with” which is an euphemism for “complete bitch”, Sir Basil says that they always got along swimmingly. When Sir Basil was in London Joan Greenwood was on it, of course. Was on his arm…I know what you were thinking…For shame, people, for shame.
